I compared a couple of cherry beers the other night. A sour stout and a smoked beer, so slightly different but both with cherry elements.

Sour forward. Black with a red highlight and a beige head tinted with red. Sour cherry aroma with a roasty malt background. Very sour cherry, balsamic, acidic, tannic. Not getting any vanilla.

I’ve been really enjoying the small batches from Overworks but the pastry stouts haven’t hit the mark for me. I wanted more from this, more cherry, more vanilla, more balance.

Burn the Kirsch – Holmenkollen Edition by @steelcitybrewing & @lost.industrybrewing & @boutilliersbrew
Smoke forward. Hazed red with a foamy white head. Smoked blue cheese aroma with a sweet, fresh cherry background. Carbonated, smoky, some cherry. Still getting blue cheese but it’s pleasant. Very interesting flavours.

This one was much better! There must be something about smoked malt or cherry wood that says blue cheese to my senses as I’ve had this before in a beer – but it’s in a good way. There was some interesting, complex notes to this which was very satisfying. I might need to see if I can find the other versions of this now!
